universalcat discovered 2 months ago- Dear USAmericans, Wondering who to believe when it comes to climate change studies? Wondering who's messing with the data? Wondering why your country is still trying to decide if climate change exists when the other 5 billion Earthlings have already moved on to trying to do something about it? It seems like every time the facts of climate change get questioned, or even its existence at all, it's by someone from the States. With that in mind, I wanted to share this article. It details the disturbing results of a survey by the US-based Union for Concerned Scientists, a politically unaffiliated non-profit organization. They talked to a random sampling of 1,600 staff scientists from the US Environmental Protection Agency. They found that 900 of them (60%) had been pressured, seriously misquoted or straightout censored by the Bush Administration over the last 5 years. This partially explains why the overwhelming majority of voices in denial of global climate change are coming from the USA. It also proves how effective a propaganda machine can be, even in a largely educated country. (For an interesting view on just how wide the Atlantic really is, compare the EPA's website with The European Environmental Agency's.) Some results from the survey: - 394 scientists (31 percent) personally experienced frequent or occasional "statements by EPA officials that misrepresent scientists' findings." - 285 scientists (22 percent) said they frequently or occasionally personally experienced "selective or incomplete use of data to justify a specific regulatory outcome." - 224 scientists (17 percent) said they had been "directed to inappropriately exclude or alter technical information from an EPA scientific document." - Of the 969 agency veterans with more than 10 years of EPA experience, 409 scientists (43 percent) said interference has occurred more often in the past five years than in the previous five-year period. Only 43 scientists (4 percent) said interference occurred less often. USAmericans, please consider carefully your vote in November. You're voting for everyone else as well. Because while you may have a separate agency for your environmental laws, and you may be a distinct media machine bringing you your information, the fact is that you and everyone else on the planet shares the same atmosphere. Considering that the US is responsible for more CO2 emissions than Russia, India, Germany, Japan, and the UK put together, that vote does indeed matter.

liquidiridium rated 2 months ago- From the page: "An investigation of the Environmental Protection Agency released today found that 889 of nearly 1,600 staff scientists reported that they experienced political interference in their work over the last five years. The study, by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), follows previous UCS investigations of the Food and Drug Administration, Fish and Wildlife Service, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and climate scientists at seven federal agencies, which also found significant administration manipulation of federal science. "Our investigation found an agency in crisis," said Francesca Grifo, director of UCS's Scientific Integrity Program. "Nearly 900 EPA scientists reported political interference in their scientific work. That's 900 too many. Distorting science to accommodate a narrow political agenda threatens our environment, our health, and our democracy itself." The UCS report comes amidst a flurry of controversial activity swirling around the EPA. Congress is currently investigating administration interference in a new chemical toxicity review process as well as California's request to regulate tailpipe emissions. And in early May, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee is expected to hold a hearing on political interference in the new EPA ground-level ozone pollution standard. "

ColinsFreakinDad rated 2 months ago- From the page: "Hundreds of EPA Scientists Report Political Interference Over Last Five Years" Go figure. The government, telling science what it will and will not accept as results... Who woulda thunk it? We're doomed to be a dumb nation, aren't we? Well, I won't let my son, at least, succumb to the numbness these buffoons want to inculcate into us. Screw them! Let science be, and let's see if we can't reshape our opinions of the universe to match the observations and experimental data arrived at by rigorous scientific scrutiny, shall we?
