From the page: "Nanotechnology researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology are developing a shirt that harvests energy from the wearer's physical motion and converts it into electricity for powering small electronic devices worn by soldiers in the field, hikers and other users."

I love it when we come up with new ways to harness the energy we naturally produce. I hope they continue to develop this technology.

It's a beautiful idea, but totally unfeasible. It simply can't be applied to real life at the moment. Very little electricity (which would be handy if you want to shock someone without doing the feet-on-carpet bit) but not enough of a charge to do much good. And then there's the problem with getting wet and the general wear and tear clothes have to deal with on a daily basis. Like I said, great idea. I hope they improve on it and actually make it applicable to daily life, but until then it's nothing more than a really freakin' cool experiment.

THIS IS SO AMAZING A scanning electron microscopy image shows the piezoelectric zinc oxide nanowires. The two sets of nanowires meet teeth-to-teeth, allowing the gold-coated microfibers to scrub those not coated with gold to produce electricity via a coupled piezoelectric-semiconducting process. This is the fundamental concept of a 'power shirt'. - Image courtesy of Z.L. Wang and X.D. Somehow I get the feeling that by the time nanotechnology is mundane enough (and cheap enough) to be used for personal entertainment we won't be using mp3 players anymore.

This is cool, but not really useful as is... it generates a tiny amount of power, and can't get wet... I realize the title says "someday", but I was hoping for more.

They only tested the clothing for 30 minutes. I think then need to realize, when people buy clothing, its for several weeks/months of wear. I think more rigorous testing should be conducted.
