From the page: "By mimicking a brick-and-mortar molecular structure found in seashells, University of Michigan researchers created a composite plastic that's as strong as steel but lighter and transparent."

So, I guess those transparent aluminum holding tanks that the Star Trek crew was working on to bring the Humpback whales back in time in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home can't be too far behind. Of course, that movie is more than 20 years old now, so half of you probably have no idea what I am even talking about. That doesn't make Spock's role any less cool, though. :)

From the page: "The scientists solved a problem that has confounded engineers and scientists for decades: Individual nano-size building blocks such as nanotubes, nanosheets and nanorods are ultrastrong. But larger materials made out of bonded nano-size building blocks were comparatively weak. Until now."

By mimicking a brick-and-mortar molecular structure found in seashells, University of Michigan researchers created a composite plastic that's as strong as steel but lighter and transparent. It's made of layers of clay nanosheets and a water-soluble polymer that shares chemistry with white glue.
