From the page: "Earlier tonight, I attended John Ashcroft's speech on "Leadership in Troubled Times" at Knox College. So, while it's still fresh in my mind, here's how it went--including the question I asked that made him lose his cool completely. (I apologize for the lack of pictures--I don't have a digital camera. As my friends post their pictures of the event online, I'll try to add them into this diary.) Knox College is a liberal arts college, in every sense of the word "liberal." Out of approximately 1400 students, the Knox College Republicans can claim only six members. Although we're a tiny college, we attract very prestigious Democrats to come speak: Barack Obama, Stephen Colbert, and Bill Clinton were our last three commencement speakers. (This year Madeleine Albright will be commencement speaker.) Not to be outdone, this year the College Republicans managed to raise $15,000 to entice Ashcroft to come speak. The past week has been a tense one on campus. Knox Amnesty International and the Knox College Democrats both planned to protest the speech. Almost every poster advertising Ashcroft's visit was defaced. Immature and vulgar anti-Ashcroft pamphlets were scattered around campus, encouraging students to disrupt the speech and featuring a picture of Uncle Sam and the slogan "YOU FUCK WITH MY FREEDOM, I FUCK WITH YOU." The Dean of Students sent out an email warning students not to disrupt the speech, but assuring us that there would be a question and answer session afterwards for students to pose tough questions to Ashcroft if they wished."

Wow. Two TOTALLY different things, forcing and pouring water into people's mouths and nostrils. You just can't compare forcing water and pouring water. Impossible.

Torture is torture, regardless of whether or not you refer to it in slightly different terminology. Seems Mr. Ashcroft obviously has some doubts about the legalities and ethics of his practices, or he wouldn't get so worked up about answering a few questions.

Ashcroft did not deserve the treatment he got, but he WAS asking for it when he decided to speak at a Collage chock full of liberal Democrats. The question was indeed an unfair comparison and was not related. Not to justify waterboarding, but you should find a better comparison. The "water torture" employed by Yukio Asano was simply not the same technique used by the Americans since in waterboarding drowning is only simulated while in the "water torture" employed by Yukio Asano you actually were subjected to drowning. But regardless, it is a cruel interrogation technique and I would question its effectiveness.

I hope conscientious people like this group of students find their way into a future US government. It is ironic that practices deemed to be illegal by Americans during WW2 are actually being perpetrated by Americans today, and officially sanctioned by their government.

From the page: "the banality of evil" This is sweet. It's also why Bush has his audience hand selected from a group of those mental slaves they're herding in the his political circle. Thanks KKSS!
