That's probably the stupidest reason to believe anything. I mean am I going to "not believe" in global warming because it might inconvenience me? Am I going to refuse to believe that vegetables are healthy simply because they're not quite as tasty as a steak? Utter nonsense. You trust the guy in the lab coat because he's staked out a huge portion of his adult life asking seemingly nonsensical questions that sometimes turn out to have incredibly useful answers. Whereas the guy that leads the church is completely comfortable not asking a single question of the world around him and accepts the first answer he hears that seems to suit his needs. I'm as suspicious of organized religion as anyone, but this kind unexamined belief is one of the main things that turns churches into an ideological Chernobyl.
