  • Temporal Anomalies in Popular Time Travel Movies

if time is seen as a dimension, and time travel a possibility, I like to view the whole affair as a series of planes and non-linear but one-dimensional paths; perhaps if visualization is necessary I should come up with some way to incorporate fragmentation as a continuous path would get... more

It's rare that I find a website that is so flagrantly condescending to its target audience. On the first page I looked at, the author makes an assertion and states that "all reasoning adults" will agree with it, because clearly there is no valid opinion but his own and if you disagree you must be a child or stupid. On a different page in the same site, he confidently asserts that "The death of the Archduke [Ferdinand] plays a major role in twentieth century history, more so than you might realize," although he doesn't mention Ferdinand's name, even though it is common knowledge. He then goes on to explain the broad history of Europe 1914--1939, as if the people who would spend their time reading a website that picks apart movies about TIME TRAVEL would be unfamiliar with basic historical facts and the implications of changing them. It's a little amazing he didn't go straight for the "but what if you killed Hitler" explination. And then just a few paragraphs later, he points out an in-joke that references Dr. Who and says he likes it because semi-serious sci-fi fans might think that Dr. Blinovitch might be a real theorist, and isn't that funny let's look at the idiots. But of course HE isn't foolish enough to be taken in by that because he's so brilliant. His arrogance blinds him to the likelihood that any fan knowledgeable enough to pick up on a reference to an old Dr. Who episode (Day of the Daleks, 1972 says Google) isn't going to be a casual fan. Furthermore, even if such a fan were to exist, how much of an ass do you have to be for your first thought upon encountering an in-joke to be not "Hey, I get that; that's clever" but rather "Oh man, I bet there's some idiot who doesn't get this."

If you want to read the analysis of your favorite time travel movie as written by someone with a mental disorder and too much free time, then I would suggest this site. Otherwise, it's a load of rubbish that can be summed up by pointing out that films that involve time travel are usually awful.

It always bugs me when movies involve some form of time travel, because they always get it wrong. There's always something that wouldn't work, and I notice it, and it takes away from the movie.
