StumbleKKSS discovered 3 months ago- Please stumble this. This was an anti-sweatshop protest at alma mater. The administration sounds so patronizing. From the page: "This was a peaceful and respectful act of civil disobedience, and I don't think academic suspension is an appropriate penalty," Kallevig said. "Last Friday, three of us went to court and pleaded guilty to our charges. We were fined $50 for trespassing, our disorderly conduct charge was dropped, and we were told if we didn't or couldn't pay the fines, which came to about $151, we could do 30 hours of community service instead." No one was hurt in the protest, nothing was damaged in the president's office, and more than 100 people - including UM faculty and staff - rallied outside of Main Hall in support of the sit-in, Kallevig said. The other students who were arrested will be appearing in court in a few days, she said. "I feel suspending us is not an appropriate consequence because we are acting on something we believe in morally and politically," she said. "A lot of campus feels the same way, and we are at a university that claims to educate engaged global citizens."
