flyinglungfish rated 4 months ago- First there are problems with capitalism and big companies ignoring common decency because it isn't cost effective, so the people demand the government step in and break up price and wage fixing monopolies, institute health and work safety standards, allow workers at least a minimum wage and 40 hour work week, and the right to unionize and whistle-blower laws in order to protect the worker's rights. Begrudgingly, the companies comply when it is cost effective to do so. Fortunately for them, the regulatory bodies now hire from within the industries they regulate so they can ensure they won't be threatened by small farms or businesses and discourage all kind of competitive behavior.

Edit:
"OK, so I take my animals and load them onto a trailer for the first time in their life to send them up the already clogged interstate to the abattoir to await their appointed hour with a shed full of animals of dubious extraction. They are dressed by people wearing long coats with deep pockets with whom I cannot even communicate. The carcasses hang in a cooler alongside others that were not similarly cared for in life. After the animals are processed, I return to the facility hoping to retrieve my meat."
I can understand why this might be an issue in certain places, but do some looking around man. Smaller slaughterhouses exist that do work exclusively for smaller farms and for individual farmers. My husband and I split a full beef (a cow, basically) with the friend who raised it. The fees were minimal; we ended up paying $2.00 per pound, and our friend was able to haul his own cattle in.
Don't get me wrong, there is a lot screwed up with our agricultural industry (as most other American industries, ha) and there is plenty of room for improvement. All I'm saying is that the smaller farms and cooperatives exist, it's just a matter of finding and supporting them.
"Those of us who would aspire to opt out -- both consumers and producers -- must pray for enough cleverness to circumvent the system until the system cannot sustain itself. Cycles happen. Because things are this way today does not mean they will be this way next year. Hurrah for that."
"Pray for enough cleverness to circumvent the system"? Seriously, pray? That's about as effective as me writing a review on this essay from four and a half years ago. :/ Just like I will tell any hard-core conspiracy theorist (not saying this guy is, but his whining is a little close to being "cuckoo"), our government isn't that slick. - Relevant to my interests. Innomen rated 4 months ago- A grand essay on the consequences of centralization on something as simple as farming. A beautiful reason to think that when humanity if offered a way of moving away from this sort of centralization, we will take it. PS. you people are stupid. Its not about farmers, ignorant meat bots, its about citizens, and the flawed thinking inherent of government. Regulation = oppression.
