One of my favorite artists of the Renaissance (along with Bernini and Caravaggio, Titian, and Tintoretto). The countless hours I have spent in the Sistine Chapel are some of the more cherished memories I own. And if you've never stood next to one of the Medici tombs in Florence, you're missing out. And in response to russelljames' moronic review: Leonardo DaVinci.

wow this is a great site. i just saw an exhibit at the national gallery called The Art of Papal Rome which was mostly original sketches/studies by Michelangelo, Raphaello and Caravaggio (among a few other masters of the time period). How beautiful. It's sad that the same support for the fine arts that existed 500 years ago does not exist now. It made me realize that humans used to revere beauty and art, and now our culture worships business. There is no way that these same masters would have had the kind of financial support they need nowadays to make a living, not when you see the amount of hours they put into simply sketching and studying the human form (as well as architecture, etc.).

After stumbling a million militantly atheist, anti-Christian sites, I can't help but wonder: what atheist (or atheistic philosophy) has created (or inspired) art as compelling as this?
