Stuff like this makes me feel so useless. This dude made a whole OS fitting on a floppy disk. In ASM. With a graphical interface. Holy shit.

Someone port it so it runs on the treo

Then you can hold up your treo and say "Menuet IN Treo"

They REALLY think that there's interest in this for commercial extension so as to close off the source for the 64-bit version?

ENTIRELY in ASM? A lot of work must have been put into that...

From the page: "MenuetOS is an Operating System in development for the PC written entirely in 32/64 bit assembly language, and released under the License. It supports 32/64 bit x86 assembly programming for smaller, faster and less resource hungry applications. Menuet has no roots within UNIX or the POSIX standards, nor is it based on any particular operating system. The design goal has been to remove the extra layers between different parts of an OS, which normally complicate programming and create bugs."

Holy fucking shit... my review would be almost a carbon copy of LeonardoDaVinci's write-up. An OS in ASM (machine language, or ML)? That would smoke, even on my 40mhz 386! To have a 64-bit OS written in ASM would even be FASTER! I can't even imagine the possibilities here. If this guy can get more attention and more developers, we may have... exactly what at least the embedded-PC market needs. It'll never fly on mainstream PCs (hell, even Linux can't), but it will certainly revolutionize embedded systems. GREAT work! edit: Well, I got a chance to try it out just now... it actually works pretty well for a floppy OS. I couldn't get audio or ethernet to work, so I couldn't try out web browsing - it's there, though, as well as some cool 3D demos and games. It's all pretty impressive, but far from a desktop OS. And yeah - there were no *nix or DOS underpinnings, it's a from-scratch OS! Nice work!

It would be interesting to see this OS get a bit of attention from the open source developers.
