  • McSweeneys Internet Tendency: Thirteen Writing Prompts.

From the page: "5. A wasp called the tarantula hawk reproduces by paralyzing tarantulas and laying its eggs into their bodies. When the larvae hatch, they devour the still living spider from the inside out. Isn't that fucked up? Write a short story about how fucked up that is."

I've come back to this a few times, and I've literally laughed out loud at a few of these. Good stuff. I'll be back.

When I run out of stuff to teach my students, I think I may use these writing prompts... OR NOT! It would be funny though!

From the page: "A husband and wife are meeting in a restaurant to finalize the terms of their impending divorce. Write the scene from the point of view of a busboy snorting cocaine in the restroom. "

Brilliantly placed between typical internet bullshit and irreverent genius. I think it's the page layout that makes it work.

I do like this site, but, Pickett, do I hear a whimper of resignation in your voice? By God, who wants to write in such small boxes, journalists? As creative as the prompts are, where are the dots? No, no, Pickett, this is creative writing in and out of tunnels. Your class allows us to shake these earthly bounds, explore the universe and our imaginations. Chin up and soldier on.
