Having worked at Google and now working in my own business, I've noticed that some days I'm just a rockstar at getting everything done, and others I can barely get a few lines of code out, or accomplish anything on my todo list. Of course, now that I'm in a really small business, every single day counts, for each person in the business.

Valueable advice, not even limited to just programmers. Everyone should take heed to some of his keypoints.

ah! Increasing programming productivity. I totally need this, I have a project at the moment I can never get in to! I procrastinate with so much other stuff.

My problems are getting "unfocused" from the job - pulling out, mentally, as it were. I get so immersed in whatever I'm doing (programming, writing, research, et al) I do it to the total exclusion of everything else, including sleeping, eating, WASHING (lol!). Yes, I'm guilty of checking my email every time I think of it, (which is often!) and IM-ing when the mood hits me (which is often!) and reading the news blogs and alerts as soon as they pop up in my email or RSS reader. Does my productivity suffer? Not as much as one would expect, since I don't leave my chair for hours at a stretch (old gamer's habit). I think that the only cure for all that is to throw all of my computers out of the window, even the one in the bathroom!
