MargaretCostello discovered 21 months ago- It has been more than 35 years since its first publication, and yet Freire's pedagogical theories remain to be relevant in this day and age. In all honesty, it's tempting for teachers to resort to explicit instruction and to posit one's self as an authority figure instead of a facilitator; its tempting to talk constantly instead of listening to our students' opinions in class. I understand that temptation, but we must fight it. There are too many teachers who are in love with the sound of their own voice. Learning is a mutual process--the classroom is the place where both student and teacher learn together, and this can only be acheived if we stop pretending to be the sole sources of information. These kids have so much to offer. They are not blank slates, they are not empty vessels to be filled with information and their opinions should not be stifled. If we encourage them think critically, to draw on the knowledge they already possess, and to pose problems instead of regurgitating facts and details, then perhaps more kids will actually look forward to going to school because they will feel like they are finally learning things that are truly relevant.
