Every American generation must have had more than enough Forest Gumps. There is no other way to explain why people continue to show up for war after war after war. Stupid is as stupid does, Sir. Both Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson declared that God had given American leaders--"Christ's Army," according to Wilson--the divine duty to "improve" the backward peoples of America and the world. Roosevelt and Wilson used that rationale to establish modern progressivism and American imperialism, both of which were part of what Roosevelt called "the long struggle for the uplift of humanity." They argued that greater government intervention, through social welfare and regulatory programs at home and military incursions abroad, would remake American slums and all the countries of the world into the Puritan ideal of a "city on a hill." To fulfill this mission, Roosevelt championed many social-welfare measures, including pure-food and worker-safety regulations, but he also pushed the United States to attack Spain and occupy Cuba and the Philippines--the so-called Spanish-American War, which historians characterize as America's "first imperial war." The assault and subsequent occupations resulted in the deaths of more than 10,000 Cubans, several hundred thousand Filipino civilians, and 4,541 American soldiers. Why Liberals Kill .... Jesus made me kill you.

The republican and democratic parties have switched sides ideologically since their formation. Also, the world wars were hardly partisan - corporate interests and foreign pressure had far more to do with us getting into that. Maps are fun, but while they can help you visualize what you already know, they can also give the illusion of being information, which is why USA Today loves them.

Ha, libertarians = 0. Right. Secondly, the democratic party from way back is WAY different than the democratic party of today. Basically, switch them around for the first, say, hundred years of US history.

This is an entirely oversimplified look at American conflict. While these might be 'wars' that the US has been involved in, it doesn't at all demonstrate the influence the US has had over the last 234 years. For example, foreign leaders who were installed by the US Government or proxy wars fought by allies. (Ex. South America.) Nor are the 'Indian Wars' very well documented. To be fair, this map only claims to demonstrate official US wars, but I really think this is a cookie-cutter way of demonstrating the complex history of one of the very few Superpowers that have ever existed.

"Led us into war" is a rather oblique and inaccurate term relating these presidents to these events. However I do agree with the libertarian view that "foreign entailment" is not good. Anyways, somebody put a lot of work into that graphic...

A very cool look at where Americans have lost their lives throughout history, almost exclusively supporting and defending freedom and democracy but in a few cases (such as Indian wars), not so much. However, there's not much point to attributing deaths to each party given that 1) the political parties have changed so much throughout the years, and 2) this doesn't really analyze the merits of any war.

Well some wars seem to have more reason that others. I see Democrats had WAR I & II but thankfully there were great causes to fight. I still think Republican are about even or more than Democrats when it comes to war.

Interesting as how the deaths only take into account the US, and to try to make one party or the other take responsbility for them. It is also a too convenient way to show that Afghanistan and Iraq have not been so costly after all in terms of US deaths. Especially compared to those bad bad Democrats.
