The official website for Brad Pitt's campaign to help the people of New Orleans build a more sustainable community. Let's go SU -- donate and help make this campaign a reality for NOLA!

This is such a great idea.

"Everyone into the fort! Rainclouds are approaching! We need to empty the sandbag furniture around the perimeter! Hurry!" Full disclosure: I have a love-hate relationship with Brad Pitt. Sure he is all dreamy and sexy and all, but my mission here is an attempt to allow Brad Pitt into my heart, while trying my hardest to understand and accept Brad not as "Brad Pitt, Actor" but more recently, "Brad Pitt, Architect." Brad is not an architect. But he plays one in New Orleans right now through his hugely modern do-good campaign called Make It Right. First, before you read too much more, you should at least visit the site www.makeitright.com and, after enjoying the borsalino-topped Pitt's video introduction, click on the Learn about Make it Right 9 link that pops up. This part explains how Brad was the only one who really realized the true plight of the Ninth Ward and how, "instinctively," he understood that a New Orleans built without the shithole 9th Ward would never really be New Orleans again. And thus begins a project to re-develop the area using mostly really popular architect friends of Brad. Back in L.A., Brad got on the horn and called all these firms and, because he is Brad Pitt, was able to get past the persnickety receptionists at - go figure - ALL the firms he wanted to say he worked at and explained his vision to Make It Right. If you are any kind of design junkie, you will recognize most of the archi-celebs and firms chosen to be part of this endeavor. But, according to Metropolis Magazine, there were "cringe-worthy" moments during the architect's presentations that flopped into the typical architectonic lingua franca diatribe of high design: those butt-clenching moments when theory-based douchebags spew incomprehensible design-speak that causes a client to seriously reconsider the entire project right on the spot. One rendering of these new houses that were to be built for the residents and be indicative of NO's architectural and social heritage showed a white dude wearing khakis and polos while relaxing on the front porch. Yes! Check out how the first residents returning to their destroyed homes seem to have discovered the stylish Tommy Bahama look in the down-time. During the media-intensive design presentations, and as each architect finished their performance in front of the 9th Ward ex-residents and walked off the stage, Brad was there to buddy-slap each on the back as if to say, "Sweeeet Bro!" Bottom line, this is a big popularity contest - as is most of modern culture - and what will be taking place here in the 9th Ward is basically a big, Archi-Celeb-Greenwashed circle jerk. If you don't believe me then just check out some of the actual designs submitted... yeah, totally practical and very accommodating to the families that are meant to move back into these studies in pre-fab cheapo-sustainable boxes that will probably float the next time New Orleans floods. You know what it is? As much as I respect Brad for at least giving a damn, I have to simply conclude that projects like these tend to be more about self-promotion than real problem-solving. And that makes me sad if not angry. It is the same concept that governs the asinine tearfest Extreme Makeover:Home Edition (Please don't get my started on Ty Pennington) which is so subtlety sponsored by Sears: align yourself with a sad story, inject some political rhetoric about "justice" and "community spirit", then top off with heaping blobs of media coverage and star-studded events where celebrities turn out in Levis and work gloves but in reality are actually positioning themselves strategically for the camera. ("Make sure they only shoot me not looking fat!")

spread the word, I too just came back. This area is a forgotten place. There are hundreds of homes that need help... street upon street..people of all walks of life. The pink forms are beautiful. The ground there is damp from tears. too bad we can no bring it a bit closer to those who can not see nor feel the emotions of NOLA

There is already enough money for 65 out of 150 houses. =] I'm glad people other than the government care. I want to go down and help with things, but I have to work out a time period thing. Working all the time sucks for trying to do things like this. "The rich cultural community of the Lower 9th Ward was devastated in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Although prayers poured out for the fallen victims of the storm, unfortunately the initiatives to rebuild this once vibrant area have fallen short. As a catalyst for positive change and the inaugural event for the Make It Right initiative, the Pink Project represents opportunities hidden within this tragedy and focuses attention on the plight of the Lower 9th. Pink is a virtual city of Hope. A hybrid of art, architecture, cinema and media, Pink is conceived as an informational, commemorative, communication tool which raises awareness and activates individual participation to heal local wounds in need of global aid."

Help rebuild the Lower 9th Ward. Tell your friends. I just returned from New Orleans, and if you haven't been, you should go, and if you have been, go back.

I love the fact that he stepped up & used his fame & fortune to help right here at home. I know there are so many hardworking & caring people that still go unnoticed and/or thanked for their dedication to helping in their own neighborhoods! I agree with will-scott on how he does stumbles about film. I love that his heart is truly in social issues & not movies etc. You can always tells where a persons heart is by how much they are involved in a subject.

Just watched Brad on Charlie rose - funny thing is, in talking about social issues and architecture he's brilliant. When pressed on film he stumbles. Interesting.

Brad Pitt is on Larry King Wednesday talking about this project at length. We can all at least get a few Tshirts for gifts, if not do a lot more. I totally agree with titansix; let's share this link and help this well-intended project! Peace.
