- This is a interesting concept. I think there's a problem with air-traffic that needs to be addressed. Also, for storms. They give a cut out speed of 32m/s and a maximum wind speed of 40m/s. What happens above that? Does someone have to check the weatherforecast and winch it down or is there some sort of automatic system to winch it down in high winds? Also there's the issue of planning permission. Another problem is what if these were to become popular? How would you prevent your turbine becoming tangled up with your neighbours. If these problems can be addressed maybe this is an idea with a future. As regards the cost it actually compares quite favourabley with the Swift and Windsave systems per unit rated power if you take account of installation costs on those two systems. I am assuming installation costs are minimal or included for this system since it seems like it should be easy to install. 4kW is a lot for a domestic turbine. The Swift turbine is rated at 1.5kW and the Windsave at only 1kW. Also I assume the cost is an initiall launch cost which will drop should the product achieve mass manufacture. The Swift turbine is currently selling at £3500 +installation +VAT totals £5,512.50. They unit price has halved since launch and they are aiming for an eventual cost of £1,500, but they're being slower than planned to achieve that so maybe it will not be possible. $9,999 is only £5,300 so that's really pretty good. However it is a lot of money as a lump sump and it is bound to put people off. That's why the Windsave, retailling at £1,500 plus installation, seems to be outselling the Swift and has secured a contract with B&Q despite the Swift being a superior machine. I think they are mis-targetting the product by launching to the domestic market. They may sell to isolated areas, presumably a much larger market in Canada than the UK, but still I think they should be focussing their attention on larger organisations which have larger budgets and an ability to take a more long term view. Such organisations are often not only in a position to set an example but also keen to do so and if they can make their product a part of that example it would provide excellent publicity. I can see why they are launching with the lower powered model which is presumably easier to manufacture but long term I think we are going to need larger turbines, either large off-shore plants feeding into the grid (which would make the air traffic problem more controllable since the interference would be locallised) or ar least at community level powering several streets of houses. The problem with that is it requires not so much new technology as a policy shift. I think it is something these guys are going to have to campaign for.

Missyjae rated 21 months ago- I like the concept, we have lots of wind turbines here in NZ which look like big hulking windmills along the upper landscapes in our capital city (Wellington) which is also our windiest city in NZ. My concern with this particular invention (good as it looks) it that it would be rendered useless if you do not have sustainable winds to keep it airborne. As with all new inventions & technological advances - it always costs an arm & a leg to procur as well. Quite frankly, if I had that kind of money - I'd probably buy one just to see how effective & efficient it is. I'm all for saving the earth, conserving energy, greenie type projects, composting toilets etc - but there must be an easier way than these overly expensive alternatives? Going back to the knuckle dragging, long drops, and hair pulling is NOT my idea of fun of course! (lol) :)
