To be honest: LyX is mainly a frontend for the LaTeX suite, which is most of those dependencies... Using plain LaTeX can be quite a challenge for new users, and LyX provides much of the power of LaTeX without the complexity... a very fair deal I'd say :) I wrote my thesis in it in 2003, and it's only gotten better in the past 5 years... oh, and the files it creates are ascii-text, so they're handled like a charm by Subversion or CVS (yuck!) :)
