"ReviewJournal.com: Four-month trial ends with no convictions" Apparently, the IRS doesn't have a law regarding how to claim income on circulating gold and silver coins (I didn't even know there were gold coins in circulation! Though I have seen the occasional silver dime show up). It seems you can report the income based on the face value of the valuable coins, even though their collector's value could be much higher. The Government lost 160 verdicts. Amazing.
