gomerman discovered 17 months ago- An open-pit diamond mine in Russia. Maybe not the largest in the world, but still impressive for its diameter (1.25 km) and its depth (525 m).

Clax rated 13 months ago- How many of these would it take to fill the Albert Hall

Reuben rated 15 months ago- HUGE Diamond mine in siberia :) 525m deep, and 1,25 km in diameter :)

5x5x5x5x5 rated 16 months ago- The giant hole is actually a diamond mine in Eastern Siberia near the town Mirna. It is 525 m deep, and 1,25 km in the diameter.

wtmu rated 16 months ago- Kindergarten sandbox digging gone overboard.

- The title claims it to be the largest in the world. Reading through the comments on the page, the largest hole is apparently in the US (Utah).

o-region-all rated 17 months ago- one huge hole! lol

docfox rated 17 months ago- We should rename this "The Earth's Ass-hole"

ar0cketman rated 17 months ago- Site is reported to be a diamond mine in Russia. From the site: "The suction above the hole resulted in several helicopter crushes, so all flight above the hole now is prohibited." Suction? If anything, there should be a nice thermal above the site. Makes me wonder if it's really a diamond mine in Russia... There are some comparable open pit copper mines moderately near that look significantly larger in person than that pit. I'll have to check Google maps... Okay, I've since googled and found a forum thread that argues the largest open pit mines WRT Google Earth. Form your own conclusions per size, but realize one thing: a deep pit becomes a fumerole, releasing the Earth's internal heat into the atmosphere, creating a rising column of air above the pit, not a suction. Rising air helps to keep aircraft aloft, but if it's a narrow column, shear could cause a wingtip (or rotor) to stall...

DingoDance rated 17 months ago- Even God needs some love ;)
