This page covers two issues: Whether Canada should ditch the penny and whether the US should add a $1 coin As for ditching the penny, I'd vote yes: If it's a piece of history, we don't need jars full of pennies; a handful should do. If it's an economic decision, it makes sense _not_ to pay millions every year to keep making more pennies - because we 'collect' them in those jars at home until we have 'enough' to spend. My 2 cents :-) Adding the US $1 coin seems to make sense economically. People could hang onto their one dollar bills if it's 'part of history'. As an example, Canada no longer has either a one dollar bill nor a two dollar bill in circulation. They have both been replaced by coins, the loonie and the toonie, respectively. Don't laugh. That's what they're called here. That's the rest of my 98 cents :-)
