sheaman42 discovered 15 months ago- Last month I showed how to unstuff a sentence by removing unnecessary words. This month I'll offer a quick-and-dirty guide to punctuating a sentence. Nothing that follows is meant to substitute for the nuanced explanations of what's usually called a writing handbook, the sort of book that college students purchase in a first-semester writing course. These five rules though have the virtue of being manageable, which is difficult to say of a 1,000-page book. In each paragraph that follows, the sentences illustrate the punctuation rule involved. Note that I'm avoiding almost all grammatical terminology. Instead, I'm emphasizing a small number of sentence patterns.

COMMENT: These tips do not resort to using technical words which I rarely understand. What is a participle, anyway? The tips give what I refer to as functional descriptions. So, when you are writing you can figure what to do. I like that.

Everyone should be forced to read this kind of thing as they grow older. Gone are the days when proper grammar was taught. I see too many grammatical errors nowadays; but all I can do is sit here and rant. Make me happy and take a look at this, will ya?!

- English 051. And yes, if you use English properly, you'll use quite a few commas.

- Rule 3. Maybe it's a regional thing, but I always thought you didn't use a comma before 'and' in a series.

missangelyss rated 15 months ago- Making simple punctuation rules easy to understand. I know a number of people I'd like to force to read this article.
