If you ever wondered, even if only for a second, how did we get here (in terms of computers...and you must be at least 38 y/o to understand what I am talking about) - here is a simple and functional timeline that shows you *all* of the languages from C# to Java and everything in between and before and since.

A lot of research has gone into this. I'd say that Ruby looks to be the most diverse and lasting language, though I have no experience using it.
