This is very touching, and I have wondered this before. Like mad05963 said I am sure it is exactly the same in Latino communities. Black struggle is deeply rooted in the fight for civil rights and it pains me to see many so hostile to those who adhere to different beliefs or a sexual orientation. All I can say is FIGHT ON and don't give a shit what others say or tell you to believe in!

Well written. I am a white, male atheist and obviously have had a much different life experience. Atheism in the bible belt has it's challenges to be sure, but I agree that it is tolerated some degree more from me due to my supposed "standing?!" as a white male. I have honestly never had the chance to even hear a position such as yours before. The group of folks here that I associate with are both primarily white and male. I have always wondered about the black community and why there were not more (openly) atheist black people. Thank you for sharing your insight into this facet of the American Atheist.

i agree as well, saoka. i don't pretend to be christian with my family, but i have a feeling a lot of them wouldn't talk to me anymore if i flat-out said i didn't believe in god. never mind that i do more with my life than any of them did.

Yes Saoka, I do agree with this.

Wow. Do those of you who are black atheists agree with this? So often, the atheist community assumes a white context, or at least it assumes that atheism is some sort of great equalizer...
