Nicely written and affectionate, this story taught me something I didn't know.

From the page: "But the guy who stole my bike from outside a Tokyo train station one recent Saturday night wasn't looking for anything flashy. He was drunk â€" it was payday and he had over-celebrated. He had slept well past his stop and was kicked off the last train of the night at the last station on the line. It was a crime of necessity: Steal the wheels or walk."

I did not look at the date of the story, and by the time I reached the end I was pretty convinced that the placid life report was from a news archive and at least 40 years old... It's filed under crime, but I guess it deserves some other uplifting tag. Also, it seems Japs are not going to give us a Mohammad Ali!

From the page: "Officers there take policing to an extreme, which is both comforting and unsettling to a reporter whose unlocked bicycle gets stolen."

don't get me wrong, a charming story well written. But obvious crap propaganda. I've got a suggestion, prioritize policing to CATCH A MAJOR THEIF, like the ones who have kept Japan's Banking and Corporate business in the toilet for 20 some odd years while the old guard conservative Govt. refuses to root out elite white collar corruption and practices. A god damn bike light is what the cops are looking out for? Suck my dick!
