Nanowires as brain sensors
I take this report - as I take everything written by science journalists - with a very large pinch of sodium chloride, since they're usually on the hunt for research grants. But the guy I've chosen to illustrate the story looks to be havin way too much fun to ignore the therapeutic and leisure possibilities of this breakthrough.
Rodolfo Llinas has developed 500-nm. nanowires that can be inserted into the blood vessels of human brains.
The nanowires may allow for stimulating the senses directly, creating visual perceptions, auditory perceptions, movements, and feelings, creating the ultimate virtual reality, as well as direct communication between man and machine or human-brain-to-human-brain communication.
The research is described on 22nd Century, a PBS pilot that aired on January 17 and can be viewed online.
The program also features research in allowing paralyzed patients to communicate, Michael Chorost's cochlear implant, and Steve Mann's Eyetap glasses, which continuously record what you see and have the ability to interject new information into what you are watching.
