Koko the Gorilla I spent quite a bit of time rummaging through here this morning reading the story of Koko, a gorilla well-known for her exceptional signing abilities and other interaction which helps humans understand much about these beautiful creatures and their thoughts and capabilities. Koko is a warm, intuitive animal whose favorite companion was a kitten named All Ball, who passed away (Koko discusses her thoughts on All Ball's death). She does art, writing and has an IQ in the range of 75-90 (100 is the average for humans). The photos are touching and provide a visual glimpse into her life and compassionate, fun-loving nature. An Interview With/About Koko Koko's Ghost Costume "Penny and Ron were looking for Koko's old halloween ghost costume, and Koko overheard them say they couldn't remember where it was. So Koko went on a creative expedition of her own and located a white plastic raincoat decorated with black animal figures, which she had once tried on for other reasons. Even though it was folded into a little 6"x8" case, Koko imagined that it would make a swell ghost costume."

Ever since I did a project on Koko and others like her when I was a kid in the 70s - I have been fascinated with the efforts of these folks.

I've been fascinated by Koko ever since I first saw her on tv. I would absolutely love to go see her in person someday and talk with her for a while. :)

The Gorilla Foundation is trying to start a Gorilla Preserve on Maui, Hawaii that will allow them to fully study gorillas while saving them as well. You can learn more about what the Maui Ape Preserve is all about by visiting the Maui Preserve section. There are also donation links all over the place, mainly because it is a non-profit organization. The way they get money is through donations and government grants. You don't have to donate money. That's a personal choice. What you can do though is educate others about gorillas. You can get free teaching materials from them to help educate your children, or the children in your classes. Or you can on the red side menu and go to the link that starts out "Teach your children" and you'll come to the same page. To learn more about Koko and how she became an ambassador for her critically endangered creatures, go to the introduction link on the side menu. You have probably seen Koko on TV or heard about her. She knows American Sign Language and is known for her love of kittens. From the introduction section, scroll to the bottom and you will find a link that reads "The Significance of Project Koko." Click the link and you will find a list of 10 ways that Project Koko is significant. Click The About Gorillas link on the side menu and learn all about gorillas, from basic gorilla life to gorilla facts. There are also some awesome primate sites that you can check out. The FAQ section answers questions that you may have about Koko, the preserve and much more.

The primary program of The Gorilla Foundation/Koko.org involves teaching American Sign Language to two lowland gorillas, Koko and Michael (who recently passed away). The Gorilla Language Project, or Project Koko, is the longest continuous inter-species communications project of its kind in the world, and it serves as a unique and irreplaceable resource for the international conservation community.

This is a great site about Koko the gorilla. She can communicate with sign language. Koko has demonstrated well over 1,000 such gestures. She also understands over 2,000 words of spoken English, so people can speak to her and she will respond in sign. She also communicates with her normal gorilla vocalizations, of purrs and cries. In more than 28 years together with her trainer, Koko has expressed the whole range of emotions associated with humans, like, happiness, sadness, love, grief, embarrassment.
