Archeological Ireland in all it's glory, Hopefully it someday may return to it's airy fairy tranquility without threat of motorway construction or the indignity of Teletubby references. :/

As an American Tourist/Author, found this to be the central hub source for all sacred sites in Ireland. Start here with one of the most ancient sites, Knowth. Knowth predates even the pyramids. Can save a lot of time to refer to this site and all it has to offer, even during travels there -- the Lonely Planet site for this subject, really.

fp:The Megalithic Passage Tombs of Newgrange, Knowth, Dowth, Fourknocks, Loughcrew and Tara are located in the present day County of Meath on the east coast of Ireland. The Boyne Valley Mounds at Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth were built around 3200BC making them older than Stonehenge in England and the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt.

Newgrange - 5000 year old Megalithic Passage Tomb, Ireland Newgrange was built about 3200 BC. The kidney shaped mound covers an area of over one acre and is surrounded by 97 kerbstones, some of which are richly decorated with megalithic art. The 19 metre long inner passage leads to a cruciform chamber with a corbelled roof. It is estimated that the construction of the Passage Tomb at Newgrange would have taken a work force of 300 at least 20 years. The passage and chamber of Newgrange are illuminated by the Winter Solstice sunrise. A shaft of sunlight shines through the roof box over the entrance and penetrates the passage to light up the chamber. The dramatic event lasts for 17 minutes at dawn on the Winter Solstice and for a few mornings either side of the Winter Solstice. Newgrange - Ancient Stone Carving from inside the chamber
