The Lady of Shalott (on a boat)1888. From old-chook66 stumbleupon. "Although often classified as a Pre-raphaelite for his styly and themes, Waterhouse is truly a Neo-Classic painter. Some of Waterhouse's earlier works were focused on italian themes and scenery, reflecting his love for his birth place. Later on, his works picked up the styles and classical themes of Pre-raphelites such as Alma-Tadema and Frederick Leighton. Waterhouse went on to paint well over 200 paintings depicting classical mythology, historical and literary subjects, particulary those of Roman myhology and classic English poets such as Keats and Tennyson. Femme fatale is a common theme in his works, as most are of beautiful elegaic women and of many men are victims." Jason and Medea (1907) "King Aeetes demanded that before Jason take the fleece he yoke together two fire-breathing bulls, plow the field of Ares, and sow it with dragon's teeth obtained from Cadmus. Aeetes' daughter Medea fell in love with Jason and gave him magical protection that allowed him to complete the tasks. In return Jason swore an oath of fidelity and promised to take her with him to Greece."

Waterhouse has been my favorite painter for as long as I can remember. He ties literature, mythology, legend and religion into his paintings, and has left representations that are some of the most well known represetnations of the subject matter. Beautiful images, and lots of extras for the home and computer if you so wish. Each painting has a history, current location, date, and the source it was inspired by.

Great site overall...paintings, poetry, mythologies, descriptions. You can also get posters and put any painting on a calendar to print out. Very well thought-out site and very informative!!

I love these paintings. The site's really well organized and executed too, though I'm not sure the graphics quite mesh.

something almost all art appreciators have in common: they like Waterhouse. Call it saccharine or sentimental, but JWW could paint flesh better than almost anyone else..

One of the best artists ever. His stuff is brilliant.
From the page: "Welcome to one of the most comprehensive galleries of John William Waterhouse paintings and the most feature-intensive site on the web dedicated to his works. Waterhouse's works are perhaps the best of the Pre-Raphaelites (although really a Neoclassic). His combination of mythology, poetry and mystique femme fatale is absolutely outstanding and soulfully touching. Here, I pay tribute to the man, my obsession, the master, with the presentation of over 100 paintings, including many high resolution images, through out 5 decades of amazing accomplishments."

Waterhouse's paintings allow you to enter a neo-classical wonderland. His mythological and mystical themes take you to another time, another place. REMARKABLE!! ;-)
