Athaton rated 22 months ago- This was a bitter yet honest essay about the state of the uneducated working poor. By talking about the bitter gap in economic and education state, Bageant address a problem that most Americans would like to ignore. Rather than being elitist, or patronizing, Bageant describes the rotting shell of small town life in areas of economic decline and the common attitudes of the ignorant, and uneducated who support a political view screws them over. Not that I really wanted to think about cheap labor conservatism before bed, it's really depressing to think of. Still the angry honesty is a bit refreshing in a way, like a sprite taken from the freezer at just the right time.
skipp0023 rated 24 months ago- I liked the miserable description of his hometown - sounded too much like Adamstown - but it was basically the standard crap after that.

- & I quote "You are dumber than a sack of hammers and should'a got an education so you would have half a notion of what's going on." Someone once told me that and, along with the advice never to mix Mad Dog 20-20 with whiskey, it is the best I ever received."
This is thoughtful and compelling verbage on why aMerica needs an education. Sharper and more considered than the average liberal rant.
Benjmn rated 22 months ago- From the page: "Here is their political universe, which I'm sure you've heard before but it's always best to keep horsecrap in one pile:
* Muslims are out to kill us all. So we need to kill them all first.
* Democrats, a party of liberal queers supported by ghetto blacks, Commie college professors and Mafia-backed unions, let 9/11 happen.
* The world hates us because we are rich.
* The snail-eating, wine-besotted French are a bunch of spiteful pussies, ungrateful that we saved their asses in World War II.
And that's it. That is the common wisdom. If it appears too common to be believable, then you have never lived in the American South."Elitist stereotypes get an immediate thumbs-down.
Speedoman rated 24 months ago- Way to be an elitist crumming on the working class.
johnscott rated 24 months ago- Why does this sound so right(!) to me?
"Never mind that Bush's economic policies are why so many of them are drinking short beers tonight, or that his tax plan made them poorer and the rich much richer."
Joe Bageant is a boozy Southerner with a skeptical take on the world of politics and neocon family values.
