The explanation sounds like bullshit, it would be better without. I seriously doubt he was thinking about "numerical and spatial qualities of digital and analogue clocks" when he came up with this. Sounds like trying to justify their work by making it sound harder than it really is. No, you don't have to consider different qualities of different clocks, just get stoned and talk about nonsense until you have a great idea about something.
