The Parisian 'Velib' bicycle-hire scheme comes to London. Excellent news for those not quite ready for the full 'bike purchase' commitment, and accompanying theft woes.

This is great development! I hope that more and more big cities around the world will pick up the idea...and I hope that the thefts and vandalizations (surely there will be some: we're talking about public property, after all) don't get this project down...

If only I didn't live in the damned Midwest, where everything is so far from everything else. It's an ingenious idea ruined for us by the fact that all of our cities are designed expressly around the automobile.
