From the page: During the revolutionary war in America, George Washington and Americas founding fathers paid pirates to protect Americas territorial waters, because they had no navy or coast guard of their own. Most Americans supported them. Is this so different? Did we expect starving... more

You started out right and I thought you were going to compare real pirates from 300 years ago to the terrorist "pirates" we have now. Then you went on to defend them... There is no justifying what they are doing.

If this was all just bull, there would be a LOT more of an outcry from European and Asian countries about it. Instead I've read more than one al-Jazeera report and various other sources all claiming the same thing. In fact some of them quoted UN officials in the nation as well making clear that these are various independent companies not advocated by the government who are responsible. Wow, the beauty of capitalism. So quit trying to defend scumbags

From the page: "Pirates were the first people to rebel against this world. They mutinied against their tyrannical captains - and created a different way of working on the seas. Once they had a ship, the pirates elected their captains, and made all their decisions collectively. They shared their bounty out in what Rediker calls â€oeone of the most egalitarian plans for the disposition of resources to be found anywhere in the 18th century.” They even took in escaped African slaves and lived with them as equals. The pirates showed quite clearly - and subversively - that ships did not have to be run in the brutal and oppressive ways of the merchant service and the Royal navy. This is why they were popular, despite being unproductive thieves."
