Apocalypse Near

Noam Chomsky

Following intellectuals' letter, Prof. Noam Chomsky explains his doctrine, discusses danger of Israel's nukes compared to 'Iranian threat,' global media's role in escalating Mideast conflict and US's place in picture

By Merav Yudilovitch

08/09/06 "Ynet" -- -- Last week, a group of renowned intellectuals published an open letter blaming Israel for escalating the conflict in the Middle East. The letter, which mainly referred to the alignment of forces between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, caused a lot of anger among Ynet and Ynetnews readers, particularly due to its claim that the Israeli policy's political aim is to eliminate the Palestinian nation.

The letter was formulated by art critic and author John Berger and among its signatories were Nobel Prize winner, playwright Harold Pinter, linguist and theoretician Noam Chomsly, Nobel Prize laureate Jos é Saramago, Booker Prize laureate Arundhati Roy, American author Russell Banks, author and playwright Gore Vidal, and historian Howard Zinn.

Prof. Chomsky, you claimed that the provocation and counter-provocation all serve as a distraction from the real issue. What does it mean?"

From the page: "Following intellectuals' letter, Prof. Noam Chomsky explains his doctrine, discusses danger of Israel's nukes compared to 'Iranian threat,' global media's role in escalating Mideast conflict and US's place in picture " A fascinating read on what intellectuals from all corners of the globe are saying about Israel and the U.S., an apocolyptic view brought to us by http://coyturtle.stumbleupon.com.

You can throw stones at the man, but the logic sure seems sound. I always liked Chomsky and his work regarding the media (though his linguistic work still bothers me). And being Jewish, he gets to tread where others fear to walk. The problem with Chomsky is that he doesn't give a shit who he offends, logic and truth are his masters, and he knows and understands his limitations as well as our own. Anyone who is willing to point out hypocrisy and lies is now in danger of being marginalized...actually...those kind of people always have been as it naturally keeps power in check...and those with power don't like being criticized. I should know...I get a little ego bruised when my students point out a gaffe. Regardless, those with power should have the integrity to admit error. You may not agree with his solutions or his analysis of the mid-east conflict, but he'll be damned if he lets popular sentiment regulate his research and his findings. Noam is by far one of the bravest intellectuals of our time. The only person that even comes close to rivaling him is probably Edward W. Said. "One can bury one's head in the sand and take comfort in a "wall-to-wall consensus" that what we do is "just and moral" (Maoz), ignoring the lessons of recent history, or simple rationality. Or one can face the facts, and approach dilemmas which are very serious by peaceful means. They are available. Their success can never be guaranteed. But we can be reasonably confident that viewing the world through a bombsight will bring further misery and suffering, perhaps even 'apocalypse soon.'"-Chomsky

CLEAREST ANALYSIS OF MIDDLE EASTERN CONFLICT THAT I HAVE SEEN TO DATE. NOAM CHOMPSKI,PROFESSOR OF LINGUISTICS AT MIT, IS THE MOST QUOTED ACADEMIC LIVING TODAY (ACCORDING TO NEW YORK TIMES) AND IS CONSIDERERED BY HIS PEERS TO BE THE LEADING INTELLECTUAL OF OUR TIMES.
