An elegant Mayfair property valued at more than £6m (even in today's depressed market) has been occupied by anarchist squatters. The penniless youths from the self-styled Da! Collective have become neighbours to some of the wealthiest individuals, swankiest restaurants and well-heeled... more

(24dash) My attitude to this varies according to how unaffordable the property being purloined is to the average person. (Admittedly, in the UK, that currently covers most of it) So, in this case, I have no problem saying More power to them!' (Even though they are probably deeply tedious people to meet in person. For example, anyone who refers to their home as a 'project space' starts ringing my pretentiousness bell. Art students, pah!) Especially when you consider that this is only one of many, many empty office spaces in London that could be doing something much more useful. (According to this, it's currently 7.8 million square feet. Or a mid-sized market town.) In that context, there are a lot worse fates than being an anarchist art gallery...

These people need to get jobs and contribute to society like the rest of us.What they are doing is no different to stealing. It doesnt matter if the property is not being used, the person who owns it is free to do what they want with it.If I choose not to use my car for a while, does that give someone the right to take it and drive it around?Of course not. This is wrong and these people should be put in jail.

Damn, they hit they the jackpot with that house. I've heard of quite a few cases like this but not involving such an expensive estate. Kudos.

From the page: "A City law firm has been engaged by the official tenants, Deltaland Resources, to reclaim the property. Squatting is not a criminal offence in British law, but a civil matter, and if squatters remain for 12 years, and no attempt is made to evict them, they can become the property's legal owners." Pirates of the land really?
