- we're talking about blood when we say that. Italians look different from Germans, etc :p since America has no real culture anymore besides food and pop culture, then we identify with the more genetic side of our heritage. though i always say im American. if they push i tell them my grandparents are from Italy and Germany.

Svanhvit rated 7 months ago- From the page: "My wife, she ain't from around here. She's Italian, I tell people. Or she tells them herself. "Oh, and have you ever been to Italy?" they ask her. "I'm Italian," she says, with as much patience as she can muster. "That's where I'm from." "Ohhhhhhhhhh...," they say. "So you're really Italian." As if there were another kind. But there is. The American kind. " Isnīt this because of the lack of history of the (white) USA, since itīs such a young country? No medieval manuscripts, no castles or gothic cathedrals, and instead people look for distant roots wherever they can find them. In Iceland we have a lot of self-proclaimed genealogists who make family trees that go all the way back to the viking era, and some people say itīs because we donīt have a lot of "real" trees...

- I can't thumb this down because it was an interesting read. But the tone of the article sickened me.

funnysnapple rated 7 months ago- great post on how americans view themselves and others view americans

LaurenKitsune rated 7 months ago- I'm an American living in Japan. You're going to tell me that if I have a child here with a Japanese man, people should roll their eyes if my child says he's American? You think America is the only country where people keep tabs on their heritage? Sounds like pretty single-minded thinking there, which is pretty much what the author is accusing people of.
