This daugerotype was taken in the mid-1800s. This particular elderly gentleman was born in 1749, which means his grandparents were born in the 1600s. So we're looking at the photographic image of someone who was directly linked to (relatively) ancient history. He died at age 107. Imagine what those eyes had seen during his lifetime--over a century...the Revolutionary War (he actually crossed the Delaware with Washington), the French Revolution, the rise and fall of slavery in the US, the beginning of the Industrial Revolution...this man would have been a veritable walking encyclopedia. And here we sit, 150 years after his death looking into his eyes on a computer screen. It just boggles my mind to think about it. Granted, I'm easily boggled but still...
