I was explaining to someone today the various reasons I have some sort of an allergy to Hindu Philosophers and Hindu Philosophies. I quote Swami Akhilananda this time, but the speaker is irrelevant: this is something many people who have grown up in a Hindu environment have realized. The sentiment expressed in this quote covers one of the several reasons I have the allergy.

- Lots of nonsense is written (both good and bad) about Hinduism -- I think that a lot of the special character of it is captured correctly in this series of observations, mostly by outsiders. The value of Hinuism has been compromised in the west both by the early intellectuals who projected their misunderstanding on to it, and on it's over-enthusiastic adherents who wed it with western philosophical ideas and crafted the New Age movement. It is worth trying to peel away those layers of misunderstanding to see the beauty and depth of what is really there.
