From the page: "12.30pm GMT update Cruise liner sinking after hitting iceberg near Antarctica Map: where the ship is sinking James Orr and agencies Friday November 23, 2007 Guardian Unlimited MV Explorer Luxury Cruiseliner MV Explorer sinking in the Antarctic ocean. Photograph: Michael Nolan/SplashdownDirect/Rex Features More than 150 passengers, including 24 Britons, have today been evacuated from a specialist cruise liner which is sinking in the Antarctic Ocean. The ship, called the M/S Explorer, is listing to 25 degrees near the South Shetland Islands, south of Argentina, after hitting an iceberg. The captain and the chief officer of the 2,400-tonne vessel are understood to have decided to remain on board for the time being. All of the other 152 passengers were put into life rafts and transferred to the cruise ship Endeavour and another rescue vessel, the Nord Norge. Article continues The captain of the Nord Norge told Sky News: "We were the first on the scene. Most of the passengers had thermal suits and lifejackets on. Everybody appeared to be in good condition." Coastguards in Falmouth, Cornwall, along with services in Virginia, US, and Ushuaia, Argentina, are assisting with the rescue operation. The ship is expected to sink rapidly. A spokesman for the vessel's tour company Gap Adventures said: "The M/S Explorer hit a lump of ice off King George Island this morning and the impact left the vessel with a crack in the hull the size of a fist. "All passengers and crew have been evacuated, they are all accounted for and are safe and well." A total of 24 Britons were among the passengers on board. As well as those from Britain, the passengers included two Argentines, 10 Australians, two Belgians, 12 Canadians, one Chinese, three Danes, 17 Dutch, one French, one German, two from Hong Kong, four Irish, one Japanese, four Swiss, 14 Americans, one Colombian and one Swede. The M/S Explorer, built in 1969, is one of the best-known specialist cruise ships in the world. It pioneered the tourist market for Antarctic tours, taking in South Atlantic highlights such as the Falkland Islands and South Georgia. The British Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) was informed of the incident at 5.24am today. It is involved because cruise liners from around the world can lodge search and rescue plans with them. The M/S Explorer was carrying a total of 100 passengers and 54 crew. A vessel called Antarctic Dream was this morning also heading to the area to assist with the rescue effort. Andy Cattrell, of the Falmouth coastguard, said: "It [the M/S Explorer] has hit something significant, certainly, because this vessel is designed to operate in these areas. "It is an old vessel - built in 1969, I believe - but it is a very well-constructed vessel designed to be down there. We know from the American coastguards that there are 154 persons on board, all abandoned into lifeboats apart from the master and chief officer." The ship was on a cruise due to end on November 26. Its usual two-week trip around the Antarctic costs around £4,000 per cabin. It is understood the passengers will be taken back to the port of Ushuaia on the southern tip of Argentina.
