From the page: "The kinetic road plates are one of a number of energy-saving measures at Sainsbury's new store in Gloucester Quays, Gloucester. The store will harvest rainwater to flush the store's toilets and solar thermal panels will heat up to 100% of the store's hot water... more

Net benefit is dubious but I still think it is a good idea... If the car is not riding over a plate but through a bump.. it will still lose that extra bit of gasoline everyone is talking here about. If it is giving results... then why not applaud for innovative thinking.

Uhm what? This is effectively a surface that is harder for people to drive on (if even by a little bit) and thus a sort of theft of fuel from the consumer. This is analogous to mounting a wind turbine to a car thinking it'll "recapture wasted energy."The only "waste" energy that comes to mind from a car is heat and sound. Sound isn't too complex to recapture, but the amount to capture is minuscule. As for heat, regenerative braking is probably the best solution there. Every time you bring a car to halt you're essentially converting all your kinetic energy into heat.

a small innovative idea that will lead to larger conservation of energy. nice.

Another way to capture excess energy. And some people need to read the the story of the Stone Soup.

so what if it captures a minute bit of energy produced by each gasoline powered car driving over it. A. when more and more people begin driving electric cars this will be a non issue. B. who remembers OFFICE SPACE. they steal a fraction of a penny hundreds of times and what do they end up with? thats right. now apply that to the fraction of a penny lost through fuel consumption and what do you get. lots of free energy.

From the page: "Scientists pointed out that the energy generated by the devices is not totally "free". Rather, they capture a tiny amount from each car that passes over them, increasing each vehicle's fuel consumption by a tiny amount."
