Use Google Trends to get a graphical representation of a keyword's popularity through the past several years. Interesting to look at, but I haven't found it to be overly useful. Use it as a component of your keyword research methods, for sure.

What percent of the online search world is the data taken as a proxy from? Seems accurate and scary that Google is watching.
