I belong to Goodreads - although I contribute not much at all. I have spent a bit of time on the site, but obviously not nearly enough - I had no idea that there were quotations on the site. Hmmmm . . . I foresee me spending a lot of time on these pages.

edit added later:

Well, I must say I'm rather disappointed. The quotations pages (and pages and pages) are disorganized - and that isn't always bad. (You've been in one of those used bookstores where there are treasures waiting to be found everywhere you look, innocently hiding among bestsellers not worth reading.) And then there's just skimming pages and pages of crap to find something worthy of stopping.

Quotations are arranged by popularity - I started off by going to page 1000. Do not do that - some things are not popular because they take time and care. Some things are unpopular because they are bad. There are quotations that read like they are plucked from conversations between any two people who are really boring. There are many, many typos. There are quotations that are mis-attributed. There are quotations that make no sense like "Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott. In short, the database is a mess.

I just don't think the whole thing is well thought out. The only attribution is to be the author. Ummm . . . aren't they trying to encourage reading books? If I know that a given quotation came from a specific book and I like that quotation, I'd want to know which book. Geez. Many quotations have no subject tags or, worse, bad tags - and one can't suggest/add tags. There are many duplicate quotations.

My enthusiasm has waned - such a promising start.

I hate the one credited to Groucho Marx. I love the one credited to Jane Austin. The one by Emerson ("To laugh often and much...") made me want to cry.

From the page: ""Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round heads in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules and they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify them, or vilify them. But the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do." â€" Jack Kerouac"
