HALLELUJAH! This is EXCEPTIONALLY TRUE, but it isnt that the rewards need not be there, it is that our nature NATURALLY GUIDES US to MEANINGFUL REWARDS, NOT SUPERFICIAL ONES: "But a growing body of research suggests that this law is not nearly as ironclad as was once thought. Psychologists... more

This pretty much explains my life. I have never done anything for the 'reward' and have often hurt myself for it. School, work, and even hobbies. I've been told I'm a good musician, and people always encourage me to do it for a living or even just play publicly but that would suck the life out of it. Even a friend or loved one asking me to play sucks the creativity and enjoyment out of it for me. It has to be intrinsic and spontaneous.. I'd argue that EVERYTHING has to be intrinsically motivated to be truly worthwhile to the world. This is why passion is such a powerful motivator. Intrinsic motivation is contagious and beautiful. However, I must say that this probably varies depending on personality type. Under Myers-Briggs I'd argue that the Perceivers are loving this article while the Judgers are finding it somewhat blasphemous.

This explains why I always resented doing chores when I was a kid. Darn my parents and giving me an allowance! (Also, you skeptics need to CHILL THE FUCK OUT)

I'm not going to Amabile's birthday party. No prizes for any of the party games, as it reduces enjoyment of participation, apparently... Halloween must not include treats either. Father CHristmas is a no-no too. Can't go round rewarding the boys and girls for being good, can we?

Brent, the article isn't saying that people won't do the tasks necessary to gain money and success, it's just saying they most likely won't enjoy it as much.

Idiocy. I don't need to read past the first sentence. Or really the title, for that matter.Maybe you don't know what a 'gain' is. Everything everyone does is for their own gain. This is not some opinion of mine, it is a simple fact that living organisms always work towards the best position for themselves. What this gain is may change, but it is always there. You know, the more I think about you people believing this garbage the more baffled I get. It's sad when something is so stupid that critically thinking about it makes it less understandable, not more...
