Program is very hard to use, especially when you've got Windows Paint and have been using it for a long time. This program has too many features that I am not ready to use. It's not for beginners, that's for sure!! Read the manual before downloading and using the software!

GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It works on many operating systems, in many languages.

I use GIMP for photo-editing images to be used in Google Earth 3D models. It does everything I need. I recommend reading the PDF user manual, particularly the intro to GIMP and the sections on selection tools (very flexible and powerful), layers and channels.

I am turning away from closed-box software as much as possible. In fact, I only want to have MS-Windows on my laptop. For graphics I highly recommend GIMP. This program is free and open-source and will get you about 75% toward what you can do with Adobe Photo Shop.
