From the page: "The White Pass & Yukon Route (narrow gauge) was established in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush; carrying hopeful miners from the Alaska coast to Carcross and Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. Getting to the gold fields over White Pass Summit by foot or horseback was an ordeal, especially given that the Canadian authorities refused access to their country unless a prospector was in possession of one full ton of supplies. "
