Smart tips on saving money on books. Like most good advice, it takes discipline to put it into effect! :)
  1. Avoid new releases: I am rarely tempted by this: except for series books by authors I am seriously addicted to. I don't know if I can hold out until Wintersmith by Terry Pratchett comes out in paperback. I've resisted so far...
  2. Read reviews: I do. This is more often a source of temptation than a brake on it! :D
  3. Find the classics online: and there are more out there each day! Check public domain audiobooks at http://librivox.org/
  4. Search for bargains: check out used books at Amazon, also
    • http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/How_to_find_a_book
    • http://www.half.com/
  5. Make Amazon your all-purpose book tool: I was so tickled to read this. I've almost always found that Amazon has the most book reviews of whatever book I'm considering.
  6. Frequent your public library: During a depression four years ago, I ran up a big fine total at my library, so I haven't been using it... a 2007 resolution, clean that up and start using the library again...
  7. Explore used book stores: That's where I spend most of my book money. :D
  8. Harness the power of the internet: Book swap sites:
    • http://www.titletrader.com/
    • http://www.paperbackswap.com/
    • http://sf-books.com/ (science fiction genre only)
    • http://frugalreader.com/
    • http://readersunited.com/
    • http://bookmooch.com/
    • http://bookcrossing.com/
    • http://bookins.com/ : A note about Bookins:
      1. You only pay shipping on books you receive, shipping is free for books you send out;
      2. Bookins makes a considerable profit between what they charge you for shipping and what they pay;
      3. Bookins encourages you to request books, and you can easily end up getting more books than you send out.
  9. Buy only what you intend to read: The hardest resolve for me to keep. I have over 100 books in the house that are TBR (To Be Read).
  10. Share: The easiest resolution to keep!
Another tip from a reader: Post your wish list; let other people buy you books. :)
