Gentoo is by far my favorite operating system, but it isn't one that I would recommend for anyone. Originally, I enjoyed Gentoo for its package management system, which is styled after FreeBSD's "Ports Collection" (which explains why it is called "portage" as it was... more

back in gentoo's glory days, i'd spend a week compiling my system from stage 1, and learned a lot about linux. for me, gentoo has lost it's appeal. i dont want to spend all fucking day compiling gnome or openoffice, and to be honest my ubuntu install is just as fast and everything just works. i'll agree that ubuntu is a bit bloated, but it takes far less time removing packages in ubuntu than it does to set up a nice desktop environment under gentoo. portage is king of package managers though. i love it

Probably the best distro. Gives you all advantages of compiling things yourself, but without the disadvantages (like finding updates and patches yourself).

Cheers to Gentoo. Very positive experience...learned a lot during the installation and definitely recommend it to anyone willing to go through at least a stage3 install. I'm not too keen on the whole livecd and gui installer though...

Gentoo is a very good distro for the advanced user. It's active, but sadly only as active as a grandma dying. It might be in its last breaths.
