Aww, I was expecting an explanation. A whole article of build-up and it turns out they still don't know how it's caused, I'm still thinking it's a result of compressed high-speed winds...but man, this has been bothering since I first heard of them, and that was yeeeears ago...

I think the Myth Busterst have studied these too, if I'm not wrong. Anyway, it seems the mechanism is not understood yet.
