Very good advice for handling someone with depression. I always urge that if a friend or family member has the symptoms of depression, which can be also the symptoms of a chronic illness. The illness should be always ruled out first! I have seen this all to often, of course it is a 'which came first, the chicken or the egg,'issue. Also, chronic depression can follow with chronic disease.

Depression is an awful illness, a whole world away from pure sympathy-seeking. So you should treat it as such. "I trust you. If you had a choice in the matter you wouldn't choose to have depression. How about we search for some solutions together?"
