    I spend too much damn time on Fark. On the one hand it's an entertaining way to keep in the loop on current events, in nice bite-sized pieces, ideal for reading for a few minutes while you're waiting for the bus or such. It's a fun way to stay informed. Also, the comments on stories are frequently entertaining and usually somewhat informative. On the other hand it can be as much of a time suck as anything internetty, particularly if you let yourself get caught into the "Someone is WRONG on the Internet!" trap. The board are full of trolls that enjoy getting people to argue with them, and the Politics tab is heavy with rabid partisans. Still, it's a worthwhile destination.

    Fark is okay if you just use it to browse odd news stories (assuming you have an ad blocker for the deluge of banner ads), otherwise it has just become a run of the mill news filter with an extremely large community of commenters. The Fark community at large, though, is uncivil (see "Internet Tough Guy"), uninformed (they get all their news at Fark), sophomoric and, in general, composed of idiots. Sycophantic behavior directed towards the website owner (Drew Curtis) is rampant. Moderation in comment threads is uneven and leans toward the political ideology of the specific moderator, and the site administrators enthusiastically enforce the website owner's extremely authoritarian attitude regarding the website community. Particularly worrisome is that Fark claims copyright on any submissions to it, and that Fark has the right to reproduce that material in any format completely royalty-free. Generally this is worded so as to protect the website operator because of the fact that they maintain such information on their servers and redistribute it, but Fark's policy specifically negates the copyright of any submitter in the case of any situation, including the use of said material to make a profit in any media. I'd discourage anyone from commenting on this site.
