Live in a box

So...because living in a trailer isn't inexpensive enough, you're now telling me to live in a SHIPPING BOX? Yuck. And, no, they are not attractive.

An interesting page on the use and alteration of recycled shipping containers to build housing and other structures. It may seem to be a somewhat appalling idea, but many of the designs look quite attractive, and these containers are relatively cheap and strong.

From the page: "There is growing interest in the use of shipping containers as the basis for habitable structures. These "icons of globalization" are relatively inexpensive, structurally sound and in abundant supply. Although, in raw form, containers are dark windowless boxes (which might place them at odds with some of the tenets of modernist design...) they can be highly customizable modular elements of a larger structure."

Container homes - I've wanted one ever since the Adelaide festival of arts used containers to build the wonderful 'red square' venue.

steel shipping containers provide a strong prefabbed frame on which a creative mind can build some awesome dwellings. container conversions rule! order one today. do your homework. get the right tools and rock on.

Some of these are really great ideas. Thanks to Umnak for this interesting stumble.

All Container housing, all the time. A compendium of pre-fab housing. I think I may be paying too much attention to this type of structure.
